FEATURE FRIDAY | CASABLANCA

Welcome to another installment of Feature Friday, in which we share with you some of our favorite Movies & TV shows!  This week: Casablanca. When we first were dating one of the things we bonded over was chatting about some of our favorite shows.  We’ve found that is the same for a lot of our couples too!  So, every now and then, we will showcase a different movie or show and share some of the reasons why we recommend it and the things that we really like about it.  So be sure to tune in, check out some of our favorites, and maybe even turn it into a date night with your fiance!  Make dinner or order in and tune in to watch one of our favorites.

This week: Casablanca.
Vibrant and fun flower arrangements
Okay, let’s just get this out of the way right up front.  Casablanca is the single greatest movie ever made. There are several movies in the “greatest-ever” conversation (The Godfather, Gone With The Wind, Singin’ In The Rain — ooh, Singin’ In The Rain is fantastic, we should do that sometime!), but you will never find a more perfect piece of cinema than Michael Cutiz’ 1942 masterpiece,
Even if you’ve never seen Casablanca, you’ve undoubtedly quoted it at least once in your life. “Here’s lookin’ at you, kid.” “We’ll always have Paris.” “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine” “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” And, yes, you’ve probably also said “Play it again, Sam,” even though that’s not teeeechnically a line from Casablanca. Similarly to how “Luke, I am your Father” or “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Casablanca is the story of Rick Blaine, an American expat living in French Morocco during the second World War. His bar, Rick’s Cafe Americain, is the go-to melting pot spot in town. In fact, his chief business rival, the Italian mobster Ferrari tells Victori Laszlo (the Czech resistance fighter) and his traveling companion Ilsa Lund that “Everybody goes to Rick’s.” Fun fact: “Everybody Goes to Rick’s” was the title of the unpublished play on which the screenplay for this movie was based.

Rick’s world is turned upside-down when Laszlo and Ilsa arrive at the bar and we learn that this is not the first time Rick and Ilsa have been in the same place together. As Rick’s past is brought to the present, Laszlo must contend with Nazi Major Heinrich Strasser and his accomodating (for now) Vichy police captain Louis Renault (Pat’s personal favorite movie character ever). Strasser is determined that Laszlo is going to tell him where he can find the rest of the resistance’s leaders. Laszlo is determined to get Ilsa to America safely. Rick has a master plan that you’d never see coming… except that by now you already know what happens on the foggy runway, as that scene is one of the most iconic and famous in movie history.
It’s funny, it’s dramatic, it’s romantic, it’s tragic, it’s indefinitely quatable, it’s inspirational, and it’s the greatestt ihng ever filmed. Enjoy your date night! Here’s lookin’ at you, kid.
