TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING COLORS
GUEST BLOGGER | WENDY DESSLER – BUZZFEED
Selecting your perfect wedding color palette means finding inspiration that resonates with both you and your partner, and applying it in a way that is visually pleasing (and that others can understand!). There are so many different colors to choose from, that the process can easily be overwhelming – but it doesn’t have to be.
Break it down and Begin with the Basics
Start by answering some basic questions to point you in the right direction:
- In general, what are your favorite colors?
- Do you have a favorite flower? Does it come in your preferred color and at the correct time of year?
- What season will it be when you get married?
- What does your venue look like and are there any colors that can’t be changed or covered (such as wall-to-wall carpet in a grand ballroom) that you’ll need to take into account?
- Is your ceremony outdoors or indoors? Your reception? What time of day will you hold your wedding?
Importance of Seasons
Keep in mind, as you consider your responses, that flower availability can vary depending on season. Even though hothouses and international production have extended this availability, there are still some flowers (peonies come to mind) that cannot be guaranteed at certain times of the year, or that only come in limited colors depending on the month.
Another seasonal consideration is that many venues install their own decorations at the holidays. This could be perfect for you, saving time and money – but you probably will not get to dictate the colors that are used in the décor, so you may have to seek information from your sales manager before finalizing things like your bridal party attire and your floral pieces. It’s all fun and games until your burgundy bridesmaid dresses compete with overwhelmingly cherry red decorations. Have the conversation when you can still adapt your plans.
Finding Inspiration
Once you have an idea of what you might like, you have tons of options for seeking inspiration. You could just start to scratch the surface of available color combinations by exploring:
- Pantone’s Color of the Year website
- Fashion-specific websites, blogs, and magazines
- Interior design blogs and magazines
- Home décor catalogs (such as Ikea, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel)
- The paint chip aisles at home improvement stores
- Popular films with dramatic styling
- Bridal shows and wedding expos
- Photos of weddings previously held at your venue
- The beauty of nature around you
- Wedding blogs, websites, and magazines
If you can’t find your perfect colors in any those sources, schedule a consultation with a reputable florist, wedding designer, wedding planner or rental specialist – any one of these professionals can help tease out your perfect personal colors.
Thinking Themes
If you are considering a theme for your wedding, there may be color combinations that naturally match your overall concept. Peacock-themed weddings are perfect for turquoise, purple and brown in various shades. Vintage weddings this year will feature blush, grey, apricot and pale greens or blues, while the holidays really are perfect for classic combinations like burgundy bridesmaid dresses with accents of gold.
Rest assured that the hardest part of choosing your wedding colors is narrowing down the choices from all of the available amazing options. Once you commit, the rest of the design elements will fall into place and you will be ready to enjoy your own stunning wedding day.
