FEATURE FRIDAY | JOY

Welcome to another installment of Feature Friday, in which we share with you some of our favorite Movies & TV shows!  When we first were dating one of the things we bonded over was chatting about some of our favorite shows.  We’ve found that is the same for a lot of our couples too!  So, every now and then, we will showcase a different movie or show and share some of the reasons why we recommend it and the things that we really like about it.  So be sure to tune in, check out some of our favorites, and maybe even turn it into a date night with your fiance!  Make dinner or order in and tune in to watch one of our favorites.
This week: Joy.
Who knew the lady that invented the Miracle Mop lived such an interesting life?
When Pat was young, he and his sister used to watch a lot of late-night TV and, as anyone growing up in the ’90s knew, that meant Joy Mangano commercials.  Whether that meant the Miracle Mop, the RolyKit, or any of her hundred-plus other patents, Joy’s bubbly attitude and tendency to tell tangential stories about her kids made her a household name at Casa De Dooley.
Joy tells her story, with Jennifer Lawrence (reuniting with her Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle director David O. Russell) playing the title role.  And, as one would expect from a Lawrence/Russell collaboration, she killed it, earning award nominations from the Golden Globes, the Denver and Detroit Film Critics Societies, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the MTV Movie and Teen Choice Awards, and – of course – the Oscars.  She won the Globe and the Teen Choice, but came up short against Brie Larson from Room at the Oscars.
The movie is more dramatic than you’d think, based on Mangano’s TV persona.  But this is a story about betrayal, corruption, embezzlement, family drama, and, yes, mops.  Joy has the brilliant idea for the Miracle Mop after cutting her hand trying to wring glass out of a regular mop.  She takes the idea to QVC, which is both the catalyst for her rise to stardom as well as the beginning of a family feud and a disastrous business relationship that extends cross-country and, eventually, to Hong Kong.
It’s a complex story that can’t be done justice in a quick blog post but if you like J-Law and Bradley Cooper as much as we do (and that’s A LOT), it’s worth a watch.
